Symara Sarai Johnson

Symara Sarai Johnson was born in Portland (Oregon) and has worked with different choreographic approaches and dances from all over the world. Her works are therefore characterized by stylistic complexity and high variance. In Trinidad and Tobago she has intensively studied Caribbean folk dance and traditional Indian dances. She received her access to modern choreography at the renowned Beijing Dance Academy in Beijing (China), where she studied for two years. She is a graduate of the dance conservatory Purchase College in New York and participated in the residency programs Bearnstow and Gibney’s Work Up. Her work has been shown at various venues in New York, and she has also performed at the Bates Dance Festival. In the past she has worked with choreographers, dancers and collectives such as Kevin Wynn, Alexandra Beller, Nattie Trogdon & Hollis Bartlett, Rena Butler, Jasmine Hearn and Hannah Garner and currently with Netta Yerushalmy, Joanna Kotze, Marion Spencer and Kalliope Piersol in the dance duo Kalliope+Symara.
