First the rumor: Sebastian can sing and play the guitar beautifully. Then first samples at birthday parties and a short time later in the opening act of Do Make Say Think in Berlin. Open mouths and spellbound listening as a reaction: hesitant questions about who he was and where he was from - the most frequently asked question anyway. So: KatCosm, Berlin. Yes, always. Meanwhile, Sebastian himself sits in his room and records new pieces together with Jana, an old acquaintance he met again by chance on the street. It soon becomes clear that Jana not only has a lot to offer vocally. Songs emerge that convincingly combine Sebastian's singer/songwriter qualities and Jana's rather anthemic pop sketches collected on tapes over the years. With disarming simplicity, KatCosm opens the door to a very private cosmos. And as if casually, the album unfolds its airy sound aesthetic. Introverted guitar songs merge into radio-play-like soundscapes. Lo-fi electro-pop, dominated by Jana's sovereign voice, stands naturally next to quiet instrumentals. Unobtrusive and miles away from kitsch, "Sophie playing the recorder at school" remains a thoroughly surprising album.
„The cover of the record, a woman in an old-fashioned hat playing an alto flute, is an ink or pencil sketch. And sketches, song sketches are what “Sophie Playing The Recorder At School” is all about “. TAZ
