Routines – Good Kids Don’t Dance

Routines – Good Kids Don’t Dance

2017, age 9 and up

about the piece

Now the movements begin to unfold, tell a story, an excitement, an experience. Routines have become dance. Practicing routines is also a major part of children’s daily lives. Adults constantly nag at them and tell them what to do: with words, with gestures: sit straight, take your hands out of your pockets, talk louder, don’t make so much noise, eat slowly, don’t fidget. Routines superimposes rehearsed rituals from dance and upbringing onto one another, only to humorously mixes them all up again: chaos and order, calm and outbursts of emotion create a cosmos, in which independency and finding new things have their own place. It is Christoph Winkler’s first piece for young audiences.

Practicing routines is a major part of children’s daily lives: “Sit straight, take your hands out of your pockets, talk louder, don’t make so much noise, don’t fidget, eat slowly”.

What does that have to do with dance? Not much at first glance – not unless Christoph Winkler shows us how such routines can be translated into dance.

A hip-hop dancer practices child body language, dances the moment of receiving a parent’s scolding. Now, the movements begin to unfold, tell a story, an excitement, an experience. “Routinen” superimposes rehearsed rituals of dance and upbringing onto one another, only to humorously mix them all up again. The dance styles of Sihäm, Aloalii Tapu and Ahmed Soura combine hip-hop elements, stylistic elements of New Style, Freestyle and contemporary dance. Together with actresses Mira Tscherne und Nina Maria Wyss from the THEATER AN DER PARKAUE’s ensemble, the dancers have developed a shared language for the stage. Danced memories follow spoken anecdotes. Words in German, English and French comment on, contrast with and give the movements rhythm.

“Routinen“ is Christoph Winkler’s first dance piece explicitly for children and teenagers.
