about the piece

“What is African contemporary” is an interview project that explores the perception of contemporary dance from the perspective of African dance artists.
Why do we actually say “African contemporary” and not “western contemporary dance”? Because when we talk about the latter, we only use “contemporary dance” to refer to the techniques, styles and practices that were developed in Europe and the USA in the 1960s.
This distinction makes the western tradition universal, and this has numerous effects, as the artists interviewed explain convincingly.
