about the piece

The project focuses on the musical work of the Canadian composer Raymond Murray Schafer. It addresses the aspects inherent in his compositions related to the environment, nature, and acoustic ecology, developing various concepts around these themes.

The first part of the project is a film based on the composition “Magic Chants”, which was shot in an abandoned gravel pit in Brandenburg. The film seeks to combine elements of digital image processing and outdoor footage with the impressive choral music of Murray Schafer.

R. Murray Schafer is one of the most important Canadian composers of contemporary music. Moreover, he was a scholar, environmentalist, and the founder of “acoustic ecology.” He is regarded as the creator of the term “soundscapes” and authored one of the most influential books on our acoustic environment, The Tuning of the World. In this book, he examines the harmful effects of sound pollution on our living spaces, drawing an analogy to material pollution. Additionally, he conducted extensive research on the relationship between sounds and landscapes within the framework of the World Soundscape Project, which he founded.
