Thieves From Heaven

about the piece

The piece “Thieves From Heaven” explores one of the most influential myths in Yoruba culture: the story of the Àbíkú, the “Spirit Child.” This myth is not only an integral part of Yoruba cosmology, but is also closely connected to the history of the precolonial West African Kingdom of Oyo. The interpretations and readings of the myth and its stories are as diverse as Nigerian society itself.

In this project, a young generation of Nigerian dance artists, in collaboration with Company Christoph Winkler, engages with the myth of the spirit children. They revisit the stories and their many interpretations from the perspective of their own identities and develop from them a choreographically inspired work.
