Lorin Sookool

Lorin Sookool

Lorin Sookool is a contemporary artist with a foundation in dance. Her interdisciplinary practice encompasses performance, text, sound, photography and film. In 2021, Sookool received the Pina Bausch Fellowship for dance and choreography, which was spent deepening her practice in improvisational dance as decolonial practice. Raised in Durban, educated in Cape Town and practiced professionally in multiple parts of South Africa, Sookool has worked with a number of local choreographers and residency bodies, with international performances in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Sookool’s work explores complex South African socio-political themes, with a focus on situations of systemic and institutionalized violence, through reflecting on her lived experience. Her artistic practice follows a process-based approach that is intuitive in nature and emergent in design, searching for the relationship between personal and collective themes, thereby becoming a reflective, reflexive, subject-centred practice. She is a Master of Arts candidate at the University of Cape Town and the 2023 recipient of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award.
