Tjimur Dance Theatre

Tjimur Dance Theatre

Tjimur Dance Theatre is Taiwan’s first professional dance troupe that focuses on the contemporary Paiwan people. Established by troupe leader and artistic director Ljuzem Madiljin in 2006 with Baru Madiljin as the dance director and choreographer, the troupe is devoted to interpreting contemporary experiences through ancient ballads. They integrate song with dance and use song as a guide for creating their dance in a display of the exceptional bodily expressions of Paiwan culture and their unique style among Taiwan’s contemporary dance troupes.

Since Tjimur’s founding 17 years ago, the troupe has put on over 130 performances in Europe, Asia, and the Americas and has been hailed as a window of exploration to unknown cultures by Total Theatre Magazine. In addition, it has had resident artist programs, performance tours to Indigenous communities and schools, and shows at performing arts venues for years in initiating greater possibilities for the transmission of art in Taiwan. In the community of Tjimur, they have held the Tjimur Arts Festival, through which they bring performers from overseas to the people in the community. For the troupe, the performing arts are no longer just something for the stage; it is something for Indigenous communities and life in general.
